Magic Torch creating comics with older people in Inverclyde

Magic Torch are an arts and heritage organisation based in Inverclyde. They engage the local community to explore and celebrate the more unusual aspects of the area’s heritage through creative outputs such as comics, drama and music.

They received funding for their innovative Light Years project where a group of older people collaborated on a comic that shares stories of their own life experiences, dreams and memories. These oral histories and personal reminiscences were worked into scripts by the group and then illustrated by artists. As well as being involved in the writing process, the group even helped create some of the illustrations themselves!

Through these sessions, Magic Torch decreased isolation amongst the participants, whilst also challenging assumptions about age.

As an unexpected outcome of the project, the majority of the group are travelling with Magic Torch to this year’s Glasgow Comic Convention!
