INCLUSIVE BASKETBALL FOR ALL IN SOUTH LANARKSHIRE

Reach for the Sky Basketball (RFTSB) was awarded £4,000 by Postcode Community Trust, a grant-giving charity, funded entirely by players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

RFTSB will use funding from players of People’s Postcode Lottery to purchase purpose-designed wheelchairs to launch South Lanarkshire’s first Inclusive Zone Basketball session in partnership with South Lanarkshire Leisure & Culture, which will be funded through their ACE programme launching in August 2015.

Inclusive Zone Basketball is an exciting new approach to wheelchair basketball played in teams of 4. The basketball court is zoned into 3 areas, of which the centre zone is for wheelchair users and the outer zones for ambulant/able bodied players.

The project concept developed after South Lanarkshire’s Active Schools team contacted RFTSB to come on board with them, Scottish Disability Sport and basketball scotland to discuss IBZ in greater detail. It was then Scottish Disability Sport paid for 7 RFTSB staff and volunteers to become IBZ certified coaches to move forward and launch IBZ in South Lanarkshire.

Reach for the Sky Basketball was set up by Graham Hunter after he completed a long dedicated run of playing basketball from club level and International in Scotland to High School and University in the United States of America and then a short professional career.

The organisation positively influences young people, both socially and economically, and provides opportunities and pathways through basketball projects and programmes. It aims to ensure basketball development in South Lanarkshire is affordable, accessible and well coached. Since the organisation was established in 2010, it has worked with over 30,000 young people and has built a comprehensive grassroots community sport structure that integrates not only with the local authority but also local and national partners.

Reach for the Sky Basketball has a wide range of programmes, throughout South Lanarkshire, such as basketball development academies, an academy development league, basketball camps and a summer streetball initiative which will provide CVP participants with ideal placements to develop their coaching alongside experienced coaches/mentors.

People’s Postcode Lottery is a charity lottery, where players play with their postcodes to win cash prizes while raising money for good causes. As a charity lottery, 55p from every £2 ticket goes to support charities and good causes across Great Britain and internationally.
